Ghanaian sound engineer and music producer, Appiah Dankwah, popularly known as Appietus, has threatened to sue the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) if the upcoming elections are not held.

According to him, it will be unfortunate if the musicians union fails to organise the elections meant to select new executives to man the affairs of MUSIGA.

MUSIGA is scheduled to hold elections on October 29 in Koforidua to elect new executives and a president of the musicians’ body.

Appietus’ threat is coming on the back of reports by the Flex Newspaper that “MUSIGA needs money for elections: Administrator Confirms”.

He questioned why an amount of GHc3,000 was collected from candidates as filing fees when the current leadership of MUSIGA knows that there was no money to run the election.

“So what are they trying to tell me, I mean they are not ready to do an election but they are ready to take money for nominations or what is going on,” he quizzed.

The producer was speaking to Black I on Daybreak Hitz (Showbiz Review) on Hitz FM Wednesday.

Appietus was the first to pick up a nomination form to contest the presidency of MUSIGA. Other candidates who have expressed interest in contesting current president Bice Osei Kuffour (Obour) are Gyedu Blay Ambolley and Daasebre Gyamenah.

According to the sound engineer, two days after he made his intentions of contesting the MUSIGA presidency known, the filing fee was increased from GHc500 to GHc3,000 and other clauses were introduced without the knowledge of interested persons.

“They are doing everything to try and discourage me from pursuing the cause but it’s funny. If they want to say that they don’t have money to do the elections I will sue them. They shouldn’t even try it, they should use some other strategy,” he said

However, Ahuma Bosco Ocansey, an Administrator at MUSIGA, has admitted that the union is faced with financial challenges but gave assurance that the elections will come off as planned.

“We will go to Koforidua next week to make some deposits, the committees are working and for me everything is on course”.

“I’m 100% confident that come October we are going to have one of the most successful congresses the union has ever witnessed,” he explained.

According to him, all the 150 aspirants who will take part in the upcoming congress will be catered for.

The four-year tenure of the incumbent MUSIGA President, Bice Osei Kuffour ends in October 2015.
